The following books are used throughout the Sweden & Climate Change unit. The books are not included with the purchased curriculum.

You might find them at your library, or as a read-aloud video online (as allowed by publishers).

You may also purchase them through the links provided (a small commission goes to Open Books; you are not charged more).

Greta Thunberg (Little People, Big Dreams)

Greta Thunberg, a young girl from Sweden, calls the world’s attention to climate change, in this short beautifully illustrated biography.

Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth

This book describes how the planet is changing too quickly, and what we can do to help. It is told from the perspective of Earth, providing an engaging storyline for children.

Choose One

Please use at least 1 of the following 3 resources for the unit.  The DK reference book is recommended. The book is not included with the curriculum.

Your selection can be used across all Open Books Learning units.

Countries of the World: Our World in Pictures

This is an excellent reference book; it is recommended across all of the Open Books Learning country unit studies. It helps tie together parts of each unit, and provides a great overview of each country. I appreciate that it illustrates developing nations as both modern and traditional; many children's atlases tend to focus on the latter.

For younger learners, you may need to help scaffold this book (e.g. paraphrase and focus only on part of the information). The benefit is that this resource will continue to grow with your child.

National Geographic Kids Website

This website includes kid-friendly content for all countries. This is a great option if you do not have access to the DK book above, or if you are looking for a more digital experience.

In the teacher's guide, I list 15-20 hand-picked books as additions or replacements for the unit. I've read through many books about Sweden and climate change; these are the best!
