Required Books

The following books are used throughout the unit. The books are not included with the purchased curriculum.

You might find them at your library, or as a read-aloud video online (as allowed by publishers).

You may also purchase them through the links provided (a small commission goes to Open Books; you are not charged more).

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa

By Jeanette Winter. Beautiful pictures and simple text tell the story of Wangari’s life. There are many replacements for this book in the optional section below.

A Tree is a Plant

By Clyde Robert Bulla and Stacey Schuett.

Choose One

Please use at least 1 of the following 3 resources for the Kenya & Trees unit.  The DK reference book is recommended. The book is not included with the curriculum.

Your selection can be used across all Open Books Learning units.

Countries of the World: Our World in Pictures

This is an excellent reference book; it is recommended across all of the Open Books Learning country unit studies. It helps tie together parts of each unit, and provides a great overview of each country. I appreciate that it illustrates developing nations as both modern and traditional; many children's atlases tend to focus on the latter.

For younger learners, you may need to help scaffold this book (e.g. paraphrase and focus only on part of the information). The benefit is that this resource will continue to grow with your child.

National Geographic Kids Website

This website includes kid-friendly content for all countries. This is a great option if you do not have access to the DK book above, or if you are looking for a more digital experience.

In the teacher's guide, I list 15-20 hand-picked books as additions or replacements for the unit. I've read through many books about Kenya and trees; these are the best!
